I recently had a birthday, and I got to thinking, What's something I've been planning to do for a long time now and yet have put off consistently? Of course, there was more than one answer because, well, I'm human, and I procrastinate, as do we all. However, one of those answers was blogging. I have considered running a blog of some sort for a while now and have always came up for some sort of excuse not to because I'm weird like that. Anyways, I obviously decided to take up blogging for real this time, and, in the process, dared myself to do something I hadn't done before. Now, dares can either be simple and easy, or more complicated and difficult. When someone dares you to sing "I'm a Little Teapot" in the middle of a mall, that's pretty harmless and simple as long as you're brave enough to face the embarrassment. However, when you make a major goal, such as a New Year's resolution, you're daring yourself, in a sense, to complete that goal. As we know, New Year's Eve resolutions are often far-fetched or unrealistic, and, too often, we end up not meeting our goal the following year. Those resolutions are almost wishes. They're ambitious and enthusiastic, but not always serious or practical. Well, maybe they're practical but not serious. We blow on a dandelion, scattering our secret wish to the wind, but we don't do anything else. We leave it to chance and luck, sitting by, waiting for our wish to happen. However, when we decide we're going to stick to a resolution, a goal, when we decide that we'll persevere and persist even when it's not fun, it almost becomes a dare. You're challenging yourself, pushing yourself to go beyond what you're used to, and driving yourself to complete a goal, whatever that goal may be. I dared myself to start blogging. Will you stick to dandelions and shooting stars, or will you push yourself? What will your dare be?
